Bob Narendra, B. University of Madras, Ph. Harvard University, faculty member at Yale since You are a control theorist of wide range and great distinction. In control theory you have worked on issues that affect a broad spectrum of new technologies in such areas as robotics, manufacturing, space technology, and medical instrumentation as well as in older technologies such as helicopter control. You use mathematical modeling to consider stability, speed, accuracy, and robustness, which are the four desirable characteristics in any efficient control system. In the past four decades, over 40 doctoral students and over 30 postdoctoral and visiting fellows have come from around the world to work with him.
Born in Madras, India, Narendra received a B.E. degree with honors from Madras University in and M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from Harvard University in and , respectively. He was a member of the Harvard faculty from until , when he joined the Yale faculty.
He has served as chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and since has organized and hosted 12 Workshops on Adaptive and Learning Systems at Yale. The biennial event, to be held again in May, is known thoughout the world as a forum for the exchange of ideas in the rapidly changing field of adaptive systems.
